I look forward to reading this book. I am a fifth generation Montanan who ran away to a blue state right after the 2020 election. I was exhausted (a county election official SO thankful I could retire after the madness of it all), sad, frustrated, and eager for a change. But, since I have spent periods of my life elsewhere, I have always known where my heart and soul reside. We have seen the change in Montana's people, from all the new ones, and the old ones' reaction to them. It's complicated. And the radicalism that has brought us all the things Quammen speaks of in your interview, thas been brewing in the rural West for at least thirty years. (Those brought in due to the Yellowstone mystic, will probably have a rude awakening...) Three sets of my great grandparents came across the perilous plains before 1875, so all of this is not new. But, the 'live and let live' attitude that I grew up with is disappearing. I hope this book convinces me there is hope for it's return.
What a good interview and I’m really looking forward to reading this book! Here’s to everyone fighting colonialism and oppression in all its forms.
You're going to love this book!

I have no doubt of it!

I've never lived in the west but only visited friends and relatives. The south has its own set of toxic myths. I suppose every place does.

I think you'll like it. It certainly shows we have more in common than we've been led to believe.
